The medical software industry in its simplest form provides
software solutions to providers of medical services. In a broad
sense, medical software technology deals with the
collection, distribution, and availability of patient medical
information. Typically, this data was managed using either a Practice
Management Systems (PMS) or an Electronic Medical Record Systems
(EMR).
HIPAA
With
the passage of the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, software vendors were
required to significantly upgrade their products to support
a more extensive and detailed insurance claim processing format.
The older National Standard Format (NSF) was given a
complete overhaul. The new Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
format would cause PMS and EMR vendors to rework their products.
Focus
Over the last 20 years, PDL has been actively involved in many

sampling of this progression includes:
1. Administrative Station (Practice Management Component)
2. Patient Eligibility Validator
3. Kiosk (touch screen) based Patient Survey/Questionaire
4. Examination Room Clinical Collection Station
5. Digital Image Collection support
6. Rules based Claim Validator and Transaction Scrubbing
7. Electronic/Paper Claims Transmitter
8. Claim Remittances
9. Practice Management Reporting
PDL has taken technology consulting roles with software vendors
supporting hospitals, practices and clinics across several
medical specialties.
Partnering
PDL has taken a partnership position with one such software
vendor offering a comprehensive clinical collection product to
the Ophthalmologic Specialty.
